Where did you grow up?

I spent years 0 to 10 on the south side of Chicago, and moved to Silver Spring, Maryland at year 11. One giant city culture to another.

What was the first wine experience you remember?

My earliest memory of wine was my father talking to dinner guests about the “horse p—” that came in a jug. Very discerning he was, and still is! He always had the right paraphernalia, decanters, corkscrews, etc.

Who introduced you to wine?

Again, it was my father who introduced me to wine. He gave us kids small samples at the dinner table. Dad always emphasized learning to drink the good wine at home so we would hate the bad stuff at parties. I’d go with him to the local wine discount store and listen to him discussing the best deals with the staff. We’d go home with cases at a time.

How did you come to the wine industry?

I came into the industry in a very roundabout way. I worked as designer, then creative director for government, corporate, academic and public media. As my income grew, I was able to buy better wine, and get more selective with my pairing decisions. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn about how the grapes are grown and how the wine is made. I took WSET levels 1 and 2 thinking I wanted to become a sommelier. As the universe would have it, I met Todd Robbins and my plan of being a sommelier as my second career turned into combining my creative direction skills with the wine knowledge I gained. I couldn’t be happier. Thank you Todd!

What is your favorite thing about Modales Wines?

Hands down the best thing about Modales is the people. I’ve never met a more talented, warm, magnanimous group of people who not only care about the vineyard, excellent wine and hospitality for our customers, but also for each other. Everyone at Modales is invested, mind, body and soul.

What is your “wine type?”

Well that’s a tough question. I find that I don’t have an overall favorite, rather a favorite in the moment, depending on what I’m eating, doing and feeling. There’s nothing like a glass of Modales Rose after a long pandemic day with frozen pizza.

How do you enjoy wine? With certain foods? In certain settings?

I will drink wine in a boat, I will drink wine with a goat. I will drink wine in the rain. And in the dark. And on a train. And in a car. And in a tree. It is so good, so good you see! So I drink it in a box. And I drink it with a fox. And I will drink it in a house. And I will drink it with a mouse. And I will drink it here and there. Say! I will drink it anywhere! Especially with those I love.
