ASSISTANT WINEMAKER POSITION

Modales Vineyards and Winery is a winery located in the heart of the Fennville AVA. At Modales our wines are carefully handcrafted. We focus on minimal intervention and native fermentation. This allows our wines to express the terroir from which they were harvested. We specialize in cool climate Vinifera wines with 40 acres currently planted with plans to double the planting within the next few years.

We currently grow the following grapes: Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Blaufränkisch, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Regent and have small plantings of the following- Teroldego, Lagrein, Petit Manseng, Sauvignon Gris, Semillion, Rkatsetelli, Tannat, Saperavi and Alicante Bouschet.

We’re currently seeking a production/winemaker assistant for our 8,000 case winery. This position will give the ideal candidate the ability to help Modales continue producing minimal intervention wines in SouthWest Michigan. As we allow our wines to express terroir, this position allows the ideal candidate to also express themselves throughout the day-to-day work and be part of the growing wine scene within the Fennville AVA.

This is a full-time, hands-on position involving physically demanding work and a diverse array of responsibilities. Modales wines is a small, tight-knit company with an exciting track record of growth and quality. Successful candidates will be hardworking, detail-oriented and passionate about wine. RESPONSIBILITIES
•  Perform and lead all day-to-day operations of wine production and analysis
•  Prepare and participate with the Winemaker in blends and trials
•  Own and maintain tidiness and cleanliness in all areas of the winery
•  Perform and manage all Crush operations
•  Participate in vineyard trips, grape transportation, sampling, processing samples and running analyses
•  Manage and train harvest intern and harvest staff
•  Represent the winery at public relations/marketing events as needed
•  Assists in data management by helping supervise data entry into Ekos (winemaking software)
•  Maintain accurate inventory of wine production and bottling supplies, reordering as needed
•  Contribute to continuous improvement of winemaking practices and processes
•  Other duties as needed, including facilities maintenance, tasting room staffing, warehouse management, packing wine shipments, etc.

SKILLS
•  Strong cellar, crush pad and laboratory skills
•  Strong mechanical problem solving skills
•  Strong forklift skills
•  Sensory evaluation of wines
•  Computer and record keeping skills
•  Excellent communication skills
•  Supervisory experience

QUALIFICATIONS
•  Eager to continually learn, improve, provide and receive feedback
•  Be welcoming, respectful, positive, humble and honest
•  2-3 years cellar experience preferred
•  Degree in Enology or related field preferred
•  Able to lift 50 pounds (repetitively)
•  Ability to work flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends and/or holidays
•  Ability to work extended hours and extra days, especially during harvest
•  Must have a valid driver’s license
•  Must be at least 21 years of age
•  Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) is a plus.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift 40 lbs., walk, stand, or sit for long periods of time. Will bend, grab, twist, push, pull, stoop, reach and lift on a regular basis.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Working conditions in the winery can be cold, very hot, wet, slippery and noisy, and involves exposure to potentially hazardous conditions. Seasonal variation in workload and long hours during harvest are required.
